Creativity

There are 366 different Starters of The Day, many to choose from. You will find in the left column below some starters on the topic of Creativity. In the right column below are links to related online activities, videos and teacher resources.

A lesson starter does not have to be on the same topic as the main part of the lesson or the topic of the previous lesson. It is often very useful to revise or explore other concepts by using a starter based on a totally different area of Mathematics.

Creativity Starters:

Secret Symbol: Place a symbol between the four and the five to get a number greater than four and less than five.

Shunting Problem: Allow two trains to pass by using the limited amount of siding space.

Square Christmas Tree: Draw a picture of a Christmas tree using only square numbers.

Sum Story: Make up real life stories for the given calculations.

The story of ...: Be creative and come up with as many facts about a number as you can think of.

Tindice: How can you put the dice into the tins so that there is an odd number of dice in each tin?

Wordles: Turn mathematical words into designs which will help you remember the meanings of the words.

"I used this with my bottom set in year 9. To engage them I used their name and favorite football team (or pop group) instead of the school name. For homework, I asked each student to find a definition for the key words they had been given (once they had fun trying to guess the answer) and they presented their findings to the rest of the class the following day. They felt really special because the key words came from their own personal information."

Notes:

We often hear the term creativity used in terms of art, music or drama. This higher order thinking skill has a big part to play in Mathematics. We endeavour to develop creative problem solving strategies and investigative techniques in our pupils by providing them with motivating open ended situations to think about.
