Construction

There are 366 different Starters of The Day, many to choose from. You will find in the left column below some starters on the topic of Construction. In the right column below are links to related online activities, videos and teacher resources.

A lesson starter does not have to be on the same topic as the main part of the lesson or the topic of the previous lesson. It is often very useful to revise or explore other concepts by using a starter based on a totally different area of Mathematics.

Construction Starters:

Hexagon: On a full page in the back of your exercise book draw a perfectly regular hexagon.

Pentagon: On a full page in the back of your exercise book draw a perfectly regular pentagon.

Polygon Riddle 3: A 'My first is in...' riddle that describes a geometrical shape. Can you construct it?

Rotational Symmetry: Draw a pattern with rotational symmetry of order 6 but no line symmetry.

This is a wonderful activity for someone who does not know Roman numerals. By completing the activity an understanding of the symbols develops and a great sense of achievement is enjoyed.

Practise using mathematical drawing instruments to construct accurate diagrams, plans and maps.

Construction Activities:

Constructions: Construct the diagrams from the given information then check your accuracy.

Loci Construction Pairs: Match the description of the loci to the diagram of the construction.

Loci Land: Make scale drawings of real life situations using ruler, compasses and pencil to answer questions about loci.

Measuring Angles: Measure the size of the given angles to within two degrees of their actual value.

Scale Drawings: Measure line segments and angles in geometric figures, including interpreting scale drawings.

Construction Videos:

Construct a congruent triangle: Construction (with compass and straight edge) of a triangle congruent to a given triangle.

Different types of Triangle: Euclid and his friends explain how many different kinds of triangle there are.

Loci The Basics: A very clear demonstration of how to use a compass and a straight edge to draw common loci.
